A low panel can scrape a vehicle, hold water or leave a sharp lip. Lifting may preserve suitable concrete, but it will not renew a worn surface, remove every crack or decide who controls a panel at the public edge.
Which driveway panels may be lifted?
Map each joint and crack. An intact panel with a practical target can be a candidate. A fragmented panel, severe surface loss, failed reinforcement or planned utility work can favor replacement.
A crack may divide one panel into pieces that do not move together. Ask whether each piece can be lifted safely and what edge may remain. Price the affected panels rather than treating the entire driveway as one uniform slab.
What fixed edges control the result?
Mark the garage floor, door, curb, sidewalk, road, drain and adjoining panels. Outdoor concrete needs a water path, so “perfectly flat” can be the wrong goal. A lift at the garage may create a new low point closer to the street.
Ask for the current and intended height at both ends. If a fixed edge limits the result, put the expected remaining lip in writing.
Follow the water before changing the elevation
Look at the driveway during or just after rain. Photograph downspouts, open joints, sediment, eroded edges and standing water. Note whether water begins at the roof, street, yard or a buried line.

Lifting changes slab elevation. It does not repair a broken drain, rebuild a failed shoulder or redirect roof water unless that work is listed. Put joint, downspout and drainage work on separate quote rows.
What Peoria conditions belong in the discussion?
Peoria County publishes a 42-inch frost depth and classifies concrete weathering as severe. The National Weather Service’s 1991–2020 normals place Peoria’s average first freeze on October 23 and average last freeze on April 16. Those are regional planning facts, not a diagnosis of one driveway.
Ask what was observed below or beside the actual panels. Water movement, fill, utility trenches, edge support and prior repairs can matter more than a general description of local soil.
Is the driveway approach private or public?
Do not assume. A driveway may meet a sidewalk, curb, ditch or approach inside a public right of way. Peoria County says an access permit is required for a new or modified driveway within the right of way of a County highway. It directs owners on state, municipal or township roads to the responsible authority.
That rule does not mean every private driveway lift needs a County access permit. Use the County permit page to identify the correct road authority, then describe the exact panels and work before relying on an answer.
Mudjacking or polyurethane for a driveway?
Mudjacking uses a cement-based slurry placed beneath the slab. Polyurethane lifting uses expanding foam and generally needs smaller injection holes. Method selection should follow the panel, void, access, target and provider’s written explanation.
Compare quotes for the same panels and intended result. Ask for the material, injection plan, patch finish, equipment route, use timing and the rule for unexpected material volume.
When does replacement become clearer?
Replacement can make more sense when deterioration is the main problem, the slab geometry cannot drain safely after a lift, buried work is planned or the road authority requires another solution. Partial replacement and lifting can share one project.
Price panels separately. A replacement quote should state demolition, haul-away, base preparation, new concrete, use restrictions and restoration.
What affects a driveway-leveling price?
The included panels, minimum service charge, amount of drop, hidden void, material, access and related water work all affect the total. A photograph cannot establish those items reliably.

What should the written quote contain?
- a panel sketch with joints and fractures;
- starting heights and intended results;
- public approach or sidewalk responsibility;
- material and injection plan;
- water, joint and crack work;
- equipment and hose route;
- patch finish and use timing;
- restoration and cleanup;
- exclusions and price-change rules; and
- provider identity and written work terms.
A one-line “level driveway” total does not tell you enough to compare the work.
Prepare for the site visit
Take one wide photo from the garage and one from the road. Add a close image of the lowest joint and a rain photo if water collects. Note vehicle-clearance problems, buried lines, radiant heat or recent utility work. Measure a gate if equipment must reach the slab through a narrow side yard.
Ask the provider to mark the intended water direction on the panel sketch. If a road-authority answer or drainage repair must come first, record that sequence.
Frequently asked questions
Can lifting remove the lip at the garage?
It may reduce the lip, but the garage, road and drainage elevations limit the result. Ask what edge is expected to remain.
Will the driveway cracks disappear?
Not necessarily. A crack may close partly, stay visible or limit how a panel can move. Ask whether crack or joint sealing is included.
How soon can a vehicle use the driveway?
The material, weather and provider instructions control the use window. Require the timing in writing and wait for the provider to release the driveway.
What if only two panels have settled?
Ask for those panels to be measured and priced separately. The quote should also explain how they meet the surrounding concrete after the work.
